Door switches: the cheap one we check first
Every microwave has a set of small switches in the door latch. They tell the oven the door is truly shut. The magnetron and its power supply
The magnetron is the tube that makes the microwaves. Feeding it are a high-voltage transformer, a diode, and a capacitor. Any one of those can fail and leave you with a cold plate. A dying magnetron sometimes buzzes louder than usual, or throws a burnt smell before it quits. A failed diode often trips your kitchen breaker or makes a loud hum. Heat and dust matter here. Control board and thermal cutouts

Safe checks you can do right now
Confirm the outlet works by plugging in something else, or test the GFCI reset if the microwave sits in a garage. Try heating a cup of water for one minute, then feel the cup rather than the water, since small amounts can fool you. Wiggle the door and listen for a clean click on close. Check that the vents on the back and sides are clear of dust, and wipe them with a dry cloth. That is where the safe list ends. Never remove a panel.
