What a dead element is actually telling you

Electric cooktops heat by pushing current through a coil or a ribbon element under glass. Something has to send that current, and something has to complete the circuit. When one burner is out and the others work fine, the problem is almost always local to that burner. When several quit at once, or the whole cooktop is dead, we start looking at the power coming into the appliance instead. That difference matters. Note which burners work, which don't, and whether the indicator light still comes on. That one observation saves a lot of guessing, and it's the first thing we ask on the phone.

Cause family one: connection and power problems

On coil-style cooktops, the element plugs into a receptacle under the drip pan. Spills, boil-overs, and years of desert dust build up in that socket. The prongs corrode or loosen and the connection breaks. On a downdraft or drop-in unit, a loose terminal does the same thing. Whole-cooktop outages point somewhere else, like a tripped breaker or one leg of a 240-volt circuit gone. That second case is sneaky. Some burners work weakly, others not at all, and the display may still light up. Check your breaker panel once. If resetting the breaker doesn't hold, stop there and call us.

Cause family two: the element itself

Elements burn out. That's normal wear. Coil elements develop a break inside the metal sheath, often near a blister or a bright scorched spot. Radiant elements under smooth glass fail the same way, though you can't see it happen. A common clue: the burner worked yesterday and is stone cold today, no warning, no smell. Another is a burner that glows unevenly, hot on one side and dark on the other. Garage and outdoor-kitchen cooktops here take extra abuse from heat and grit, and elements in those spots tend to give out sooner than the ones indoors.

Cause family three: switches and controls

Behind each knob sits an infinite switch that cycles power on and off to set the heat level. When it fails, the burner may stay cold, stick on high, or come on and drop out at random. On smooth tops with touch controls, a failed control board or a cracked ribbon connection acts about the same way, and you may see the light respond while the element never warms. Heat is often the culprit. Vent openings clogged with dust make the control area run hotter than it should, and hot electronics fail early. This family needs meter testing, not eyeballing.

Safe checks you can do, and where to stop

Turn the cooktop off and let it cool. On coil models, lift the element straight up and out, look at the prongs for pitting or black burn marks, wipe out the drip pan, then reseat it firmly. Swap a suspect coil with a matching one from a burner that works. If the good element heats in the dead spot, the socket or switch is at fault. Check your breaker. Confirm the knobs are seated on their stems. That's the line. Don't remove the cooktop, unscrew any panel, or probe wiring. Call us and we'll take it from there.
